One content creator has recreated Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition in DOOM, making a reference to one of the remastered collection's most controversial issues, but keeping the series' original aesthetic using the classic engine. The long-awaited GTA trilogy remaster officially released digitally last month across consoles and PC, allowing nostalgic players to re-experience Rockstar's three PS2 era classics - Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - on modern systems. Upon release, however, the GTA trilogy remaster met with fan backlash due to technical issues and inconsistencies, resulting in modders stepping in to rectify its numerous ongoing issues and delivering early on promised improvements from the developer.
The modding scene surrounding DOOM is considered to be one of the oldest of its kind in gaming. Players began creating mods for the first two games in the mid-'90s and have been recognized for more or less creating the video game modding phenomenon. Bethesda has even gone so far as to license mods for new chapters of remastered titles such as DOOM 64. Modding for Grand Theft Auto, on the other hand, gained its popularity and prominence due to Grand Theft Auto III, which caused great change in the industry. Its groundbreaking open-world sandbox elements helped amass a community that began modding in the early 2000s. As both DOOM and Grand Theft Auto continue to thrive due to their popularity, it was only a matter of time before they were finally brought together.
As shared on Twitter, content creator Low Poly Depression claims to have recreated Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition in the original DOOM game. In the looping GIF posted by the creator, the player can be seen standing in front of a Cluckin Bell set in a 3D world reminiscent of the early 2D GTA games. New character and weapon sprites can be also seen, along with the GTA trilogy remaster's thick low-quality rain effect, which previously plagued the collection before being patched out by Rockstar due to backlash.

While it is unknown if the user made this recreation from the ground up on the DOOM engine, it's likely that they ran numerous mods pertaining to GTA on the engine at once to completely match the aesthetic. The thick rain filter mocking the GTA trilogy seen in the GIF is a downloadable WAD called the "Definitive Rain Edition." It was created upon the title's release and can be easily found online and added to or mixed with any other DOOM WAD to obscure the game.
While unexpected, seeing players continuing to blatantly mock the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition with recreations and mods doesn't come as a surprise. The GTA trilogy remaster is now one of the worst-reviewed games of 2021 despite continuing to receive support from Rockstar, and more mods regarding the maligned title could be on the way, whether they're designed to help remedy the collection or make more jokes at its expense.
