Google Pixel Watch Release Date Leaked, Here's When You'll Finally Get It

 Good news, Google fans! A potential release date for the Pixel Watch just leaked, and it's a lot sooner than we had hoped. Here's what we know.

The Google Pixel Watch is a device that's been rumored for years at this point, but if one new leak is to be believed, it could finally launch in a matter of weeks. Ever since Google launched its Wear OS platform in June 2014, there's been a nagging desire for the company to create its own smartwatch. Google's tried its hand at Android phones for years with the Nexus and Pixel lines, so it'd only make sense for it to have its own smartwatch, too — right?

Apparently not. Year after year, there are murmurings of Google working on the long-awaited Pixel Watch. Just as reliably, those rumors never come to fruition. This very thing just happened last year. Renders leaked in April 2021 revealing the Pixel Watch's design and some of its potential features. Combined with the debut of Wear OS 3 that same year, all signs were pointing to a Pixel Watch actually launching in 2021. But, of course, that didn't happen. It's now January 2022, and the Pixel Watch is still nowhere to be seen.

The good news? There may be some light at the end of this very, very long tunnel. On January 21, Jon Prosser shared a possible release date for the Pixel Watch. Specifically, he claims, "I’m hearing that Google is planning on launching it on Thursday, May 26th — over year [sic] since we leaked it." Prosser does warn that Google "is known for pushing back dates," but this May 26 date could make a lot of sense. Google typically holds its I/O developer conference in the second or third week of May. That means Google could announce the Pixel Watch during its opening keynote for the event and then launch it a few days later.

The Pixel Watch Isn't A Matter Of 'If,' But 'When'

Although it may seem silly to get excited about a Pixel Watch release date when every other year has been a bust, the possibility of a Pixel Watch has never been more certain than it is right now. Along with the leaked renders last April, a report from December further confirmed Google was developing an in-house smartwatch for release in 2022.

We also have a pretty good idea of what features the Pixel Watch (or whatever it's called) will offer. It's expected to run Google's new Wear OS 3 platform, use fitness tracking features that integrate with Fitbit, and have a higher price to better compete with the Apple Watch. Will that be enough to finally give Android users the 'Apple Watch killer' they've been waiting for? It's honestly hard to say. Google enthusiasts are foaming at the mouth for the Pixel Watch. There's no doubt about that. But considering the poor commercial success of Pixel smartphones up until this point, can Google really do any better in the wearable niche?
