The Witcher: Deleted Scene Offers Early Insight Into a Season 3 Storyline

A deleted scene from Season 2 of Netflix's The Witcher offers audiences early insight into some of the major storylines of the upcoming Season 3.

Following the release of The Witcher Season 2, Netflix dropped two deleted scenes for audiences to pore over. One of those scenes offers a small measure of insight into one of the storylines viewers will see when Season 3 hits screens.

The scene takes place at an unknown time during the events of Season 2. Within the halls of Aretuza, the mage Stregobor confronts a pensive Vilgefortz by the fireplace. Most notably, the scene sees Stregobor recap Vilgefortz's past, from his birth as a peasant through to his rise to power. It also teases the rift between the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, from which new drama will unfold in Season 3.

It's worth pointing out that Season 3 is set to adapt the events and characters of Andrzej Sapkowski's Time of Contempt, the second novel in the core Witcher saga. Among other things, the novel marks substantial changes for mages and sorceresses across the Continent, divided along lines set by the war between the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire, which Season 2 explored more in-depth.

It's unknown how closely Season 3 will adapt the novels. That being said, showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich previously teased that Time of Contempt will not be the only novel being adapted. Season 3 will include at least one storyline from Blood of Elves. One that could not be included in Season 2. Hissrich explained, "We approximately do a book a season, but we also make sure that the stories from that book are best in that season of our television show. So sometimes we move those chess pieces around a little bit... There's a big story from Blood of Elves that we're gonna do in Season 3 for instance."

However, the overall scope of The Witcher will not surpass the source material. The showrunner confirmed that there are currently no plans to create any more story beyond those woven by Sapkowski's novels. "I just don't feel the need for us to keep creating stories after his intentional end," she said.

While Season 2 of Netflix's The Witcher does introduce a variety of new elements to the story, Hissrich explained at least one of these deviations by highlighting some of the difficulties Blood of Elves presented when it came to writing a story for a visual medium. "Blood of Elves, I have to say, was terrifying to me in terms of adaptation. I found it so much more difficult, in some ways, than Season 1 and certainly more difficult than what I know is coming down the pike," She stated. "Because it's a book that's a lot about character relationships and character movements, but not a lot of forward propelling action."
