Andrew Garfield In Cobra Kai Season 6? Who Showrunners Would Cast Him As

Could Cobra Kai mega fan Andrew Garfield be in Cobra Kai Season 6? The showrunners discuss who they would cast him as and if it could possibly happen.

Cobra Kai showrunners speculate on who they would cast mega-fan Andrew Garfield as in Cobra Kai season 6. Garfield is the star of Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man series, as well as films like Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge, Martin Scorsese's Silence, and Lin-Manuel Miranda's tick, tick...BOOM. The actor has been vocal about his love of Netflix's hit show, which prompted a viral video from the Cobra Kai cast, expressing their appreciation of Garfield's passion for it.

Cobra Kai is a spinoff/revival series based on The Karate Kid films, directed by John G. Avildsen and written by Robert Mark Kamen. The films starred Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Noriyuki Pat Morita, and Martin Kove, among a rotation of guest stars from film-to-film. Showrunners Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald created Cobra Kai, which picks up some 30 years after the events of those films, ushering in a new era for the characters from the series, as well as a new batch of young karate students, who continue the bitter rivalry between warring karate dojos.

In an interview with Collider, Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald respond to Garfield's expressed love for the show and speculate on who they would cast the Spider-Man actor as if he were to appear in Cobra Kai season 6. "I will say that we were giddy as well when we saw his reaction and how much he loves the show. We’re all fans of his," said Hurwitz, who suggested Garfield play something surprising. He continues, saying, "I think that you’d give him a unique look and a unique feel and unique angle and make him unlike any other character in the show." Hurwitz is reluctant to go into specifics about the possibility, however, saying, "I probably shouldn’t say anything because who knows? Maybe he will be on the show and I don’t want to take any chances of ruining that."

Schlossberg had a more direct answer to the speculation, saying he'd potentially align Garfield with LaRusso's side, saying, “I know in the video Andrew Garfield had mentioned Miyagi-Do forever, so I have a feeling that he’s gonna gravitate towards Daniel LaRusso.” Hayden, however, has another take for where Garfield would fit in, which would have shades of the actor's role in The Social Network. “I feel like he’s a tech billionaire who buys out all the auto sales places in the valley and becomes just the ultimate foil for everybody," said Heald. It's all speculation at this point, but Garfield just wrapped the mini-series adaptation of Under The Banner of Heaven and is set to play the lead in a new Brideshead Revisited adaptation, but is otherwise open.

Actors have frequently appeared on shows that they are fans of, oftentimes in a small cameo role, but sometimes one that is much more substantial or recurring, such as Britney Spears in How I Met Your Mother or Mark Hamill in What We Do In The Shadows on FX. Garfield is enjoying a kind of renaissance after some recent roles in high-profile projects, so it's no surprise that calls for him to appear in something like Cobra Kai are growing. Getting Garfield to appear in a surprising project has certainly proven to be possible, so it's not hard to imagine him showing up in the valley to disrupt some karate rivalry or join in the fun.
