Love & Thunder Trailer Secretly Hints At Thor's Tragic Death

Marvel Studios releases a new trailer for Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder secretly hinting at the tragic death of Thor (Chris Hemsworth).

The new Thor: Love and Thunder trailer secretly hints at Thor's tragic death. Following the hotly anticipated release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel Studios is returning to the big screen with the Taika Waititi-directed film Thor: Love and Thunder, continuing the Asgardian's story after the events of Avengers: Endgame. If the second trailer for Thor 4 is any indication, however, it seems like this will also be the final outing for the God of Thunder.

While the film's initial teaser trailer mainly focused on Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) personal arc post-Infinity Saga, the full-length official trailer lays out the movie's overall story with a clear look at Thor's reunion with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) as Mighty Thor. The Marvel Studios marketing footage also finally debuts Christian Bale's villain, Gorr the God Butcher. Amid all of this, however, the latest Thor: Love and Thunder clip may have secretly teased the death of the Avenger.

The Thor: Love and Thunder trailer opens with Korg (Taika Waititi) telling the story of Thor, particularly focusing on the Asgardian's mission on Earth and weight-loss journey after his Fat Thor stint in Avengers: Endgame. Noticeably, however, the Kronan talks about the God of Thunder in the past tense, hinting that by the time he recalls Thor's adventures, he is no longer around. Without any context given to Korg's storytelling, it's difficult to say when exactly this scene takes place in the movie. That being said, Thor dying in Thor: Love and Thunder shouldn't be a total surprise, especially since he's facing Gorr the God Butcher who is bent on seeking revenge against gods. It isn't outside the realm of possibility that the Avenger sacrifices himself to stop the villain and save everyone else-including the love of his life, Jane.

It's worth noting that a literal death isn't the only way to do this. Perhaps Thor gives up his freedom or powers to defeat Bale's Gorr in Thor: Love and Thunder. This will effectively sideline him in the MCU for the time being and allow Jane Foster to inhabit the Mighty Thor persona without sharing the identity with the Asgardian prince. In any case, it doesn't seem like Marvel Studios is re-assembling the Avengers any time soon as it focuses on sequels, origins stories, and smaller team-ups. This will be a great way to let the MCU develop newer heroes with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) assuming leadership positions without totally writing Thor out of the franchise. For Hemsworth, it also gives him the chance to expand his career by taking on other roles.

Whatever the case may be, everything that has been revealed through Thor: Love and Thunder's trailers looks solid. Despite the film's many moving pieces, there seems to be a clear focus on the God of Thunder as he navigates this new chapter in his journey in the MCU. If the movie indeed decides to kill Thor, or strip him of his powers, Marvel Studios has time and again proven that some characters don't necessarily stay dead in the MCU-including Thor's own brother Loki, who has faked his death multiple times, then actually died, and was still brought back to the franchise as a time-branching variant.
