Yellowjackets Is the Most-Watched 1st Season On Showtime in 6 Years

Following the season finale of Yellowjackets, the survival thriller series has doubled its premiere viewership, breaking records for Showtime.

Following the cliff-hanger season finale of Yellowjackets, the series broke the record of being the most-watched first season of a series on Showtime in 6 years. Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets is a psychological horror and coming-of-age survival drama set between 1996 and 2021. The latest Showtime series features a stellar cast, starring Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Ella Purnell, Christina Ricci, and many more.

Now, according to Deadline, the finale for Yellowjackets amassed over 1.3 million viewers on Sunday. While doubling its premiere viewership, the series has simultaneously become the second most-streamed series on the television network, following its predecessor, Dexter: New Blood. It has been estimated that Yellowjackets has accumulated more than 5 million weekly viewers throughout various platforms, marking the series to be the most-watched on Showtime since Billions which premiered over 6 years ago.

The survival drama, somewhat based on William Golding’s acclaimed 1954 novel Lord of the Flies, was originally planned for a feature film with Warner Bros. Pictures but was later pitched as a five-season series and acquired by Showtime. With Yellowjackets continuing to retain a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it is apparent that the series was successfully adapted, squashing the initial concerns about how the series would portray the barbarism of teenage girlhood. Although there is minimal information in regards to the premiere of season 2, according to Showtime Networks' president of entertainment Gary Levine, the thrilling series was renewed for a second season and it is slated to premiere towards the end of this year.
