Godzilla TV Show Set In MonsterVerse Happening: Get The Details

A live-action Godzilla TV show set in the MonsterVerse franchise is officially happening and will be set up for streaming service Apple TV+.

A live-action Godzilla TV show set in the MonsterVerse is happening at Apple TV+. The MonsterVerse franchise kicked off back in 2014 with Gareth Edwards' Godzilla reboot. Despite quibbles about that film's human characters and lack of screen time for the titular monster (until the third act), Godzilla earned mostly positive reviews and grossed $524.9 million at the worldwide box office. That success paved the way for more MonsterVerse installments, including Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and last year's Godzilla vs. Kong - which was a big draw on HBO Max and in theaters.

These days, many tentpole franchises are looking beyond the big screen and taking advantage of the opportunities presented via streaming services. Marvel and Star Wars continue to expand their stories with TV shows on Disney+. HBO Max is complementing DC movies such as The Suicide Squad and The Batman with spinoff shows. Now, the MonsterVerse is the latest property to join in on the trend, bringing Godzilla to the small screen.

Apple TV+ announced the new live-action Godzilla show produced by Legendary Television. The series will take place in the MonsterVerse. It does not have a title yet, but Apple did reveal a plot synopsis. Read it in the space below:

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.

After the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, no other MonsterVerse movies have been officially announced. While the franchise will in all likelihood have a future on the big screen, the Godzilla TV show allows Legendary to keep the property active in the pop culture zeitgeist as they plan out what's next. It's curious the series will call Apple TV+ home, as all the MonsterVerse films were distributed by Warner Bros. and Godzilla vs. Kong had a simultaneous release on HBO Max. However, Legendary collaborates with a variety of studios. Anime program Pacific Rim: The Black is on Netflix, despite the Pacific Rim movies being released by Warner Bros. This should be a big boost for Apple TV+, a streaming service that has some hits to its name (mainly Ted Lasso), but has arguably lagged behind its competitors in the streaming wars.

Specific details like cast and episode count are unknown for now. It will be interesting to see if any actors from the MonsterVerse films reprise their roles, establishing connective tissue between the show and the movies. On-paper, placing the focus on a single family makes it sound as if the narrative could be smaller-scale when compared to the films (the kind of story better-suited for TV), but that doesn't mean skirt action set pieces the MonsterVerse is known for. The Marvel and Star Wars shows stage impressive action sequences that are on par with their feature film counterparts, so in all likelihood there will be some destructive Godzilla action on the small screen when the show premieres.
